New Medicine Service

Periville Pharmacy proudly supports our customers throughout our community. One way of supporting patients with chronic conditions is the New Medicine Service.

What is the new medicine service?

The New Medicine Service (NMS) is a free NHS service that provides support for people with long-term conditions. When new medications are prescribed, the service can help to improve medicines adherence. The primary focus of the NMS is patients specific long-term conditions

How does the new medicine service help?

The aim of this service is to help patients take the correct dosage and correct frequency of their prescribed medications. This helps the patient manage their condition but also to reduce medicine wastage

In addition, medicines adherence will reduce hospital admissions from adverse drug reaction by identifying them in the early stages of the treatment. During your consultations with the pharmacist, you will also be advised on lifestyle intervention that will help with the management of your condition(s).

Who is the new medicine service for?

The NMS focuses on patients with the following conditions/treatments:
– Antiplatelet/Anticoagulant therapy to treat blood clots or thrombosis.
– Asthma or COPD
– Hypertension (high blood pressure)
– Diabetes

If you have one or more of the above conditions, you might be eligible for the NMS service.

What happens during the NMS process?

Firstly, a member of the pharmacy team will offer you this service and ask for your written consent to participate in the NMS.

Next, during the initial consultation, one of our pharmacists will provide you with some general information about your new medication and the service. Then, we’ll arrange a follow-up consultation with you. This could be a phone call or a face-to-face follow-up for about two weeks time.

During your follow-up consultation, the pharmacists will ask you about how you got on with your medication. Together, you can discuss any issues you might have encountered and the pharmacist will offer relevant advice and support. A final consultation will also be arranged in another one to two weeks time.

This process allows you to develop a good understanding of your new treatment and to ensure that you aren’t having any adverse effects.

When you start a new medicine next time, come and speak with a member of our team to check if you are eligible for this service, or reach us here.
