What Is the DTP Vaccination?

The DTP vaccination protects against:
  • Diphtheria – a potentially fatal throat and breathing infection.
  • Tetanus – a serious infection that can enter the body through cuts or wounds.
  • Polio – a viral infection that can cause paralysis.
This vaccine boosts the protection given earlier in life through childhood immunisations and helps keep that protection strong into adulthood.

Who Should Have the Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Polio Vaccine?

You may need the DTP vaccination if you:
  • Missed the teenage dose at school.

  • Have a deep, dirty, or high-risk wound and are not up to date with tetanus protection.

Who Cannot Have the DTP Vaccine?

Most people who need the vaccine can have it safely, including those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. You should not have the vaccine if:
  • You’ve had a severe allergic reaction to a previous dose.
  • You’re allergic to ingredients such as neomycin, streptomycin, or polymyxin.
If you’re unwell with a fever, it’s best to wait until you feel better before vaccination.

Side Effects of the DTP Vaccination

Most side effects of the DTP vaccine are mild and short-lived, such as:
  • Soreness or swelling at the injection site.
  • Mild fever or headache.
  • Feeling tired or slightly unwell.
Serious reactions are very rare. The vaccine used in the UK does not contain live bacteria or viruses, so it cannot cause tetanus, diphtheria, or polio.
