Yellow Fever Vaccine: Everything Travellers Need to Know

Yellow Fever Vaccine - Periville Pharmacy

If you’re travelling to a country where yellow fever is a risk, getting vaccinated is one of the most important steps you can take before you go. The yellow fever vaccine protects against this serious mosquito-borne disease and is required for entry into some destinations.

This guide explains who needs the vaccine, when to have it, the possible side effects and how to get your yellow fever certificate before you travel.

What Is Yellow Fever?

Yellow fever is a viral infection spread by infected mosquitoes. It can cause fever, muscle pain, headache, jaundice and, in severe cases, bleeding and death. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent yellow fever when travelling to affected countries.

Who Needs the Yellow Fever Vaccine?

The yellow fever vaccine is recommended for anyone aged 9 months and over travelling to an area where yellow fever is found, or to a country that requires proof of vaccination for entry, according to the NHS.

You should consider the vaccine if you are:

  • Aged 9 months or older.
  • Travelling to an area where yellow fever is found.
  • Travelling to a country that requires proof of vaccination for entry, even if you’re only passing through.

It’s given as a single injection into the upper arm at least 10 days before you travel to allow time for protection to develop.

Where Is Yellow Fever a Risk?

Yellow fever is spread by infected mosquitoes that bite during the day, and it’s found in:

  • Parts of sub-Saharan Africa
  • South America
  • Central America
  • Trinidad, in the Caribbean

It isn’t found in the UK, Europe, Asia, Australia or New Zealand, but a certificate may still be needed if you’re travelling onwards from a risk country. For destination-specific requirements, check TravelHealthPro, the UK’s official travel health resource.

What Are the Side Effects of the Yellow Fever Vaccine?

Most side effects are mild. According to the NHS, up to 1 in 3 people get:

  • A headache
  • Muscle pain
  • A fever
  • Soreness at the injection site

These usually pass within around two weeks. Rare, more serious reactions are more likely in people aged 60 or over, or those with a weakened immune system, which is why a pharmacist assesses your suitability first.

How Do You Get a Yellow Fever Certificate?

You’ll receive an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) when you have your yellow fever vaccine. Here’s what you need to know:

  • It’s issued at the same appointment as your vaccination.
  • It’s valid for life, following a 2016 change to international health regulations.
  • Some countries require it for entry, so it’s important to check the requirements for your destination before you travel.

When Should You Book Your Yellow Fever Travel Vaccine?

It’s best to book your yellow fever travel vaccine 6 to 8 weeks before you travel, giving you enough time for any other travel vaccinations you may need. You’ll need to have it at least 10 days before departure, as this is the minimum time needed for the vaccine to become effective. As it’s only available from registered yellow fever vaccination centres, it’s worth booking your appointment early.
